Happyness first burst on to the indie scene in 2014 with Weird Little Birthday (AudioHammock review). The album was short, sweet, and full of enjoyable instrumentation that had you realizing these cordial British gents were on the cusp of something great. The trio of Benji Compston (guitar/bass), Jonny Allan (guitar/bass), and Ash Cooper (drums) felt and breathed like a new generation of Wilco and Built To Spill and a few of us ventured down to Boise in 2015 to catch them live and recieved confirmation of their instrumental prowess when the bandmates would swap instruments at moments in their live set without skipping a beat.
Fast forward to now and Happyness has a respectable following thanks to tour dates at SXSW, Treefort Music Fest, and other various stops and festivals across the States and back home in Britain. Next month their sophomore release Write-In will be out in the states on Bar None records and I called Jonny and Ash from across the pond to talk to them about the album, their recording space, hilarious travel stories, how they have consciously drawn more from their insutrments and lengthened their songs on Write In, and more. An interview not to be missed! Listen below, on iTunes, or by searching AudioHammock on any podcast app or device.
